Our little man is 3-years-old and having the hardest time understanding the whole boy, girl thing. Gender has been a hard topic for him to grasp.
What I mean by this is that he does not get that you don’t just change genders randomly.
He constantly asks me things like this.
“Was I a girl when I was born?”
“Is sister going to be a boy when she grows up?”
“Was brother a girl in your tummy?”
I’ve run out of ideas to help explain this to him. Simply saying, “no, you were born a boy and that is why you are still a boy” has not helped him understand in the least.
I guess I never really thought about how hard this subject is to understand. I get it but I’m an adult and gender makes sense to me. He’s still a baby and the idea that your body doesn’t just change from girl to boy (or vise versa) willy nilly is just too overwhelming for his little mind to comprehend.
He’ll learn all these wonderful facts soon enough though. For now I’m just going to let it be and let him go about asking if this person or that person started out as the opposite sex when they were born.
Plus, I secretly think it’s pretty funny that these questions even occur in his mysterious head.
