Out of the Mouths of Babes ~ Bedtime Struggles

posted in: Kiddo Talk | 0
I can’t be the only one who has trouble putting kids to bed. Toddlers are the worst! They will come up with every excuse under the sun to get them out of falling asleep.
Little brother has always had trouble going to sleep. He can’t calm his body down enough to fall asleep fast. It takes him about an hour or so of whining, playing and talking to himself before he finally crashes. It’s gotten better, he generally keeps himself content until he wears out, but it didn’t used to be that way.
I used to have to lay with him for hours before he would relax enough to sleep and once I finally left the room the same excuses would always come up.
This was his routine most nights. It’s funny now, but was definitely not funny at the time it was happening!

  • Little brother: “I’m thirsty”.
  • Me: “get a drink”.
After getting the drink…
  • Little brother: ” I have to pee”.
  • Me: “go pee”.
After peeing….
  • Little brother: ” I have to poop”.
  • Me: “go poop”.
After going poop (and after my patience was gone)…
  • Little brother: “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!”
  • Me: “GO TO BED!”
  • Me: “STOP GETTING OUT OF BED!”
  • Me: “STOP CRYING!”
  • Me: ” YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO TO THE BATHROOM! YOU JUST WENT!”
  • Me: “NO! NO MORE WATER!”
  • ME: “I JUST COVERED YOU UP!”
  • Me: “I’VE GIVEN YOU 15 HUGS!”
  • ME: “i’VE GIVEN YOU 15 KISSES!”
  • Me: “YOU MUSIC IS ALREADY PLAYING!”
  • Me: “IF YOU DON’T GO TO BED I’LL SEND DADDY IN THERE!”
And then he would run out of excuses and start screaming this…
  • Little brother: “I NEED SOMETHING! I NEED SOMETHING! I NEED SOMETHINNNNNNGGGGGGG!”
He’s a smart kid, he knew exactly what he was doing and he had succeeded. He had managed to make is dad and I lose our minds and prolonged his bedtime by 2 hours.
Little brother = 1
Parents = 0
This score seems to be a trend :/
